University of Florida signee Michael Frazier scored 21 points and Kasey Hill added 20 points for Montverde Academy on Saturday night in a 74-62 victory against host Orlando Christian Prep at the Thanks 4 Hoops basketball doubleheader.

In the early game, Dr. Phillips, No. 4 in the Sentinel Super 16, got 23 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals from junior RaShawn Powell in a 58-55 loss to Palm Bay Heritage.

No. 1 Montverde Academy led the entire way against the Warriors as No. 2 OCP could get no closer than 25-23 in the second quarter and 43-40 in the third.

“Getting off to that good start was key for us,” Montverde coach Kevin Boyle said. “OCP was not going to go away, and that fast start really helped set the pace.”

Montverde led by nine points on two occasions in the first half despite early foul trouble for Hill. Montverde made five 3-pointers in the first quarter and led 39-31 at halftime.

“This is a good experience for our younger guys to learn from,” OCP coach Reggie Kohn said. “They’re a good team. They got out to that early lead on us, and we were just unable to catch them.”

Senior Jordan Montgomery led OCP with 18 points, while junior Dre Clayton added 16.

Powell carried Dr. Phillips by scoring 15 points in the second half but turned over the ball when he was called for stepping out of bounds with six seconds to play.

Dr. Phillips (1-1) led by 11 points in the second half until Heritage nailed back-to-back 3-pointers with three minutes left to take the lead for good.

“It was clear from the beginning that this game meant a lot more to their players than it did to our players,” Dr. Phillips coach Anthony Long said.

The Panthers trailed by nine in the first half following a 13-2 run by Heritage, sparked by a 3-point basket from LeRon Smith.

Dr. Phillips tied the score twice in the final seconds of the first half after rallying behind buckets by Isaac Lane, Roderick Lawrence and Powell. The score was tied at 25 at halftime.
